Indoor Bowls

Rhiwbina has probably one of the best Short Mat Greens in South Wales. There are two permanent rinks, each approximately 22 metres long, located in a purpose-built room at Rhiwbina Recreation Club.

The short mat game of bowls is extremely popular and involves a lot of skill and concentration. Although it is very competitive, it is also a very sociable, friendly and worthwhile sport.

Our home, Rhiwbina Recreation Club, also has two outdoor bowling greens, two well-appointed bars, a large function room and ample car parking spaces. The Recreation Club also provides excellent tennis, squash, table tennis and rugby facilities. We share the indoor facility with our Rhiwbina Ladies Indoor members and often meet and play mixed events.

Men’s Indoor Bowls

Why not join us? We are very lucky that as part of Rhiwbina Recreation Club we have excellent indoor facilities to play indoor bowls. We invested in the main Indoor facility recently and it is now bright and a welcoming environment in which to meet and play bowls.

We are a very friendly club and love meeting a few times a week to enjoy a chat and a game of bowls. Some games are competitive, but mostly we are there to have fun and have a bit of exercise.  The atmosphere is very relaxed and we are always very welcoming to new members.

Over the summer period (April – September) the indoor rinks are available, but most of the membership play outdoor bowls. Our main season starts from September. Men’s time for using the rink is as follows:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings – 9.45a.m. until 11.00 and 11.15 until 12.30 (2 sessions with refreshments at 11.00)
Tuesday afternoon – 2.00p.m until 4.00p.m
Evenings – Monday, Thursday and Friday, Sunday (mixed event)  starting  at 6.00p.m.

Over the winter, internal competitions are arranged for Monday and Friday sessions – see notice boards for further details.

We also run some internal competitions and play occasional matches against other clubs from the surrounding area. We also have a few Ladies v Men’s events over the winter period.

If you have a few hours to spare or you are looking for a new hobby to try out, then we would love to hear from you. Bowls can be competitive, but also a lot of fun and provides a great opportunity for you to get out and meet up with friends and helps keep you mobile.

Why not give it a try? You will love it!

Ladies’ Indoor Bowls

Ladies’ Indoor Bowls was first played at Rhiwbina on roll-out mats in the main hall of the Recreation Club in 1965. Our present and permanent facility was opened in 1985. We are a busy, active club with 55 members. We play in Welsh league matches, friendlies, in-house competitions as well a full programme of ‘umbrellas’, ‘spoons’ and roll-ups. We have a winter tour each season, also a busy social calender enjoyed by all. We are a very friendly group and welcome new members; free coaching is available upon request.
